Here are Bryan's top tips for effective escalation:

- **Differentiate risks from issues** - escalate risk when there's a credible threat to an important service and issues when a live incident could affect tolerances.
- **Act early** - don't wait for impact; early warning signs like third-party fragility or data integrity concerns should trigger action.
- **Be precise** - state what's happening, what's at risk and what support is needed.
- **Stick to structure **- use your playbooks or governance models and keep it factual.
- **Escalate with balance** - avoid drama, but don't undersell material risks.
